Calling new creatives

D&AD and Getty Images get together to launch a sexy new prize for emerging advertising photographers

James Reid, photography director of Wallpaper* magazine; Jefferson Hack, editorial director of Dazed Group; Johanna Neurath, design director at Thames & Hudson; Sarah Thomson, head of art production at Fallon; Daniel Moorey, head of print at communications agency adam&eveDDB; Andy Saunders, senior vice president of creative content at Getty Images; and photographers Oliviero Toscani and Miles Aldridge – these industry-leading figures are all on the extremely impressive judging panel for the Next Photographer Award.

A new prize organised by D&AD and Getty Images, the Next Photographer Award offers emerging image-makers the chance to be mentored by professionals such as Sarah Thomson and Daniel Moorey, funding to realise a personal project, flights and tickets to the D&AD Professional Awards Ceremony, and a coveted D&AD ‘Pencil’ mark of honour.

Entrants are invited to submit three images, which can be from a series or one-offs, and which can be on any subject. There is no age-limit, but entrants must be out of full-time education and have no more than three years’ editorial and advertising industry experience as a photographer; it costs £40 to enter.

The Next Photographer Award will produce two shortlists, one in November 2014 and one in March 2015, with one entry allowed per entrant per deadline. The overall winner will be picked from the two shortlists and announced at the D&AD Professional Awards Ceremony in May 2015.

“Creatives can now start new careers at all stages of life and these awards allow us to find and recognise new and emerging talent – with a real opportunity to kick-start their careers with mentoring and guidance from some of the industry’s best,” said Thomson. “We… are looking forward to discovering fresh and inspiring talent – that is, a photographer who has the ability to tell a story visually with unique and creative vision, outstanding technique and originality,” added Saunders.

D&AD is a non-profit making organisation dedicated to creatives working in advertising and design, and its Yellow, White or Black ‘Pencils’ are an internationally-recognised industry accolade. www.dandad.org
