Places: The Photographers' Gallery's Bookshop in London
When The Photographer's Gallery closed to begin construction on a brand new space in Autumn 2011, many thought the bookshop would have closed with it. But in the spirit of keeping aspects of the gallery alive, talks and courses have continued to run in other locations and the Bookshop has been running from a temporary space.
Joanna Cresswell
BJP caught up with bookshop manager John Buckle to reflect on this transitional phase as preparations for the opening of the new gallery and bookshop - due for completion early next year - go under way.
BJP: The Photographer's Gallery Bookshop was one of everybody's favourite go-to's for Photobooks. Where are you operating from while the new build goes underway?
John Buckle: The Bookshop is operating from The Photographers' Gallery Temporary Offices at 3rd Floor, 7-9 William Road, London NW1 3ER. This is a few minutes' walk from Warren Street, Euston and Euston Square Underground stations.
BJP: Has it been difficult? What challenges have you faced?
John Buckle: It's been challenging; a lot of people assume we are closed because our building in Ramillies Street is currently going through renovations and they do not know the Bookshop (and Print Sales) is still trading from a temporary location. We've been doing our best to inform people of our activities via our website, newsletter and social media channels and are seeing the results as more customers frequent the shop and become aware of our unique range of books and cameras.
BJP: So how do people go about gaining the books they want?
John Buckle: We still have backlist titles plus a wide range of the latest books from around the world. An ever increasing selection of these is available from our online shop but we have even more in-store. You can call or email us with orders and enquiries or you can visit the temporary shop and browse in person. We ask customers to call us before visiting because we are running a reduced operation during the re-development and want to make sure a member of Bookshop staff will be present to assist.
BJP: Can you tell us about some of the most exciting new titles you have in?
John Buckle: We stock a wide selection of photobooks including some rare and hard-to-find publications and limited editions. A few of our most exciting new titles include Blind Spot Series 02: 1991 by Richard Misrach (Blind Spot, £65), a haunting documentation of the Oakland-Berkeley fire aftermath; Chromes by William Eggleston (Steidl, £220), a three volume boxed set by one of the masters of colour photography; Series by Enrique Metinides ( Kominek, £43.00), examines the news photographer's images of disaster scenes from the perspective of cinematography; Redheaded Peckerwood by Christian Patterson (Mack, £40.00) is an eerie set of images depicting places, things, ideas and moments relating to Charles Starkweather and Caril Ann Fugate 1956 killing spree and Daniel Meadows: Edited photographs from the 70s and 80s (Photoworks £25.00), presents a collection of five projects which showcases Meadows' brilliant documentation of British culture at the time.
We have also increased our range of unusual camera equipment including products such as the exclusive Neingrenze 5000T tilt lens camera and repaired and reconditioned vintage Polaroid Land Cameras.
BJP: Any news on the new bookshop?
John Buckle: We are excited about the new Gallery and Bookshop and are already sourcing new ranges and particularly imported books and cameras, some of which are already available to purchase from the shop. We are also working on the design of the new shop which will offer an improved customer experience.
BJP: When can we expect the new gallery/bookshop to open?
John Buckle: We expect to open Spring 2012 and hope to announce exact dates beginning of next year. Keep checking our website for more information and new announcements.
