small correction

It is just a small correction to a good overview.
Phase One software started out as a Canon RAW converter, not a Nikon RAW converter.

In the Spirit of Openness

If PhaseOne is so 'open' to the medium format community why cannot I shoot to or open my H files in CaptureOne? Clearly something is 'closed' here, yes?

Open OR Dictator Cameras

The politics of owning a camera really sucks!

Can You Afford This?

As a package, I find the Pentax to be superior. I say this because this camera company produces products that pass the economics of ownership. No other component of user-ship will drive a user past the profitability line of ownership, than extreme maintenance costs. The cleaning, adjustments, moisture, the switches, the soft-ware up-grades, the never ending learning curves and then the discontinuance of the camera and all the support you require after just a few years of ownership.

I just read of a professional that rents, rather than own, these high end medium format digital cameras. In that article he stated he does not want to own products that have huge sensors with dropped pixels. Going further, as these cameras are developed, there is that never changing landscape of ‘More-Camera-For-Less’ in the future. Not to pick on Hasselblad, but they always seems to introduce cameras that seem to ‘Churn’ the market for more money and now locking a user into ‘their system’.

As a pro I could not care less because everything is business expense. But, if you’re not profitable, why make a company more profitable than you?

I am sure if these companies gave the cameras away for free, they would do extremely well selling the parts!

adapt and/or die?

Its great to hear that Leitz have introduced adaptors (albeit at over £500 each) to be able to use lenses designed for this machine,( which is, of course, in all aspects infinitely superior) on the S2 which costs over £17,000 for the body alone.

But who, in their right mind will then waste almost double the purchase price of this better camera to downgrade to an S2?.

And is this what is meant by devolution?
