The Best Photobooks of 2011 - Paloma al Aire by Ricardo Cases

Paloma Al Aire by Ricardo Cases.

As 2011 draws to a close, BJP looks at the best photobooks that were published this year, and Ricardo Cases' Paloma al aire is one of them.

Author: BJP's editors

Spanish photographer Ricardo Cases appeared in our Talent Issue (#7790) thanks to a tip-off from the bookseller, Markus Schaden.

Now his third book, Paloma al aire, is out, published by Schaden with Dewi Lewis and Photovision, and it’s easy to see why he’s winning attention.

Capturing a strange traditional game involving brightly painted pigeons in all its comic absurdity, the book features full-bleed images broken in two by crude metal ring binding, which keeps it on the right side of cute.

The book made Alec Soth's list of best photobooks of the year, too, in the comedy section, with the Magnum photographer commenting: "A documentary on pigeon racing that manages to be funny, mysterious and strangely touching."
