The Guardian Eyewitness app lets users view the images, which are published each day in the newspaper's central pages, full-screen on the iPad, a multimedia reader released this week by Apple in the US. The UK version of the iPad and the Guardian Eyewitness application will be released later this month in the UK.
Roger Tooth, head of photography at the Guardian, comments: "Guardian Eyewitness is a daily showcase of some of the world's best news and features photography, and each day the app will display a new image in a brilliant, large, electronic format. Guardian Eyewitness isn't just another newspaper photograph - we want to hold the user's attention for more than two seconds. We want them to study the picture, look at the detail and appreciate the work that the photographer has put into the image. We've been waiting for a chance to replicate the scale and the impact of the newspaper's Eyewitness spread on other digital platforms, and I think this is it. Each Eyewitness picture will be accompanied by a few words written by our photographic team that we hope will give users an insight into the creation of great photography."
The application has been designed in collaboration with Canon.
