Some say the Nikon D3s is out of this world

NASA has ordered 11 Nikon D3S cameras to use on the Space Shuttle, and later at the International Space Station, alongside 7 AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lenses.

'No special modifications will be made to these products,' says Nikon. 'They will be the same products available to end users, confirming the incredible versatility of the D3S. This equipment will be used along with the Nikon D2XS digital SLR cameras, Nikkor lenses and Nikon Speedlights already in use at the International Space Station.'

NASA is reported to have captured more than 700,000 images using Nikon equipment carried into space, beginning with a Photomic FTN (made to NASA specifications) on the Apollo 15 mission.
In 1980, the 'Small Camera', based on the Nikon F3 and equipped with a motor drive, and the F3 'Big Camera', which utilised long film, were delivered to NASA, who went on to use the F4, F4S and F5 in the 1990s, before using the D2Xs digital in 2008.
