The move, first revealed by Amateur Photographer magazine on 09 June, has now been confirmed by Leica Camera in UK. A spokeswoman has released a statement announcing that Leica had "taken the first floor of 25 Bruton Place, directly opposite the Leica Store."
As a result, Leica UK is looking to restructure its operations by bringing its product technical support team to 25 Bruton Place. "[Leica] is currently concluding an internal restructure consultation programme," says the company. "Subject to completion of the consultation programme, the company is proposing to cease offering these services from Milton Keynes. The company is proposing to create three new Client Care positions to be located at Bruton Place, supporting all UK Leica owners."
The new facility, says Leica, will be operational this summer.
Leica is also moving towards an European direct distribution plan. While ordering, billing and stock enquiries will continue to be conducted via the UK sales desk, dispatches will be conducted from an European warehouse. "There will be a phased transition between closing the Milton Keynes warehouse and transferring the distribution," says Leica. "The Milton Keynes warehouse is due to close in mid summer."
As for the administrative and sales side of Leica UK's operations, they will continue to operate from Milton Keynes - but from a different location. "The registered office address of Leica Camera Ltd will switch to our Bruton Place Leica facility."
Leica UK, up until last year, has been operating solely out of its Milton Keynes offices. However, in September, to coincide with the launch of its flagship S2 medium format camera system, Leica opened a dedicated store in the heart of London.
The Leica facility, from where senior management operates, is comprised of a ground floor retail store showcasing and selling the full Leica range of products, first floor offices, a 'Leica Akademie' training and demonstration centre and a Leica S-System studio.
According to Amateur Photographer, the changes will result in at least five positions being axed.
