Fujifilm has announced that its GF670 Professional medium format film camera is now available to UK photographers

Less than a year after Voigtlander released the camera under the Voigtlander Bessa III name, Fujifilm's medium format film camera is now being distributed to the UK by its original manufacturer.

The portable folding bellows camera was jointly developed by Fujilfim and Cosina. The camera's most unusual feature is a mechanism for switching between two different film formats - 6x7cm and 6x6cm. It is also fitted with a Fujinon EBC 80mm f/3.5 fixed focal length lens, which is composed of six glass elements in four groups. The GF670 has an automatic lens shutter, and an SPD sensor with both automatic and manual autofocus. The ISO sensitivity ranges from 25 to 3200.

The camera also provides -2/+2 exposure compensation and includes a hot shoe flash mount and a PC sync connection socket. The 'whisper quiet' shutter mechanism is an Electronic Leaf shutter with speeds ranging from 4s~1/500s including bulb with flash sync at all speeds.

The GF670 weighs 1kg and measures 178x109x138mm when opened. The body is cast in magnesium alloy with aluminium parts, and the camera can be fitted with a hotshoe flash. In Japan, the GF670 will be released with soft leather case and a dedicated lens hood. Read our extended review of the camera here.

While Fujifilm released the GF670 under its own brand in Japan, the medium-format camera was distributed under the Voigtlander Bessa III 667 outside of Japan, where it seemed Cosina had sole distribution rights. But, Fujifilm's announcement changes this, as the firm has now decided to export the camera.

"We had the GF670 on our stand at Focus and it created a real buzz, medium format photography is enjoying something of a renaissance at the moment and I'm sure this new camera will help keep the format alive," says Fujifilm's Product Manager for film products, Gabriel Dacosta. "Many landscape photographers plus those involved in advertising and portraiture realise that traditional film produces the best results and that medium format is the perfect solution for their businesses."
