A Polish student studying at Middlesex University has scooped the D&AD New Blood prize for photography

Author: Diane Smyth

Ula Wiznerowicz has won D&AD's prestigious New Blood prize for photography, with a portfolio of images shot in her native Poland.

Wiznerowicz has just graduated from Middlesex University, one of D&AD's network of New Blood colleges. D&AD is best-known for its work with creative, design and advertising agencies, but its gone for a resolutely uncommercial photographer here, whose project, Behind the Curtain, tackles alcoholism in her village, Palmowo, and the surrounding area, Wielkopolska. "Forgotten and useless things covered in dust; emaciated cats running around searching for leftovers; rooms taken over by spiders' webs and the strong odor of alcohol," she writes. "This is just part of the chaos I found photographing over a period of one year.

"The series represents a personal journey through the individual stories of the men and women dealing with alcoholism. I have attempted to create a visual narrative to reflect on my own story of the past. All the characters are not necessarily alcoholics, but everyone has been affected by alcoholism, through family or friendship."
