Ed Swinden has won the Shoot the Street! competition, run by BJP and the Format Photography Festival.
The young photographer fought off more than 100 other entries from all over the world, impressing judges with the consistency of his vision and execution. Swinden wins a solo show at the Format Photography Festival in Derby from 04 March - 03 April 2011, and the exhibition will also travel further afield. He described the news as "fantastic".
Swinden, who has won the very first Shoot the Street! competition, was picked out by a four-strong judging panel: Diane Smyth, deputy editor of the BJP; Louise Clements, senior curator, co-founder and director of the Format Photography Festival; Mike Seaborne, senior curator of photographs at the Museum of London; and Sophie Howarth, co-author of a book on street photographysoon to be published by Thames & Hudson.
The 2011 Format Photography Festival is based around the theme Street Photography; Right Here, Right Now, and Swinden images will take their place alongside some of the all-time greats in street photography. His exhibition will be curated by Louise Clements and printed by MX Display Solutions. In addition, Swinden also wins a Think Tank Retrospective Lens Changer 2, courtesy of Snapperstuff.
If that's the best "street photography" on offer in the uk something is very wrong. Sorry Ed, but you are not at war with the obvious.
I wait in anticipation that the photo shown is either one of a series that creates a sum greater than its parts.. or that for some reason the judges have not put forward the best of Ed Swinden's shots.
So judgement suspended for now.....
The shot that won the street photography competition. Are you saying that it represents the very best in street the UK has to offer? If so this is a great cause for concern Pat Lyttle / Jstreetstyle
My god...really? That seriously is one of the most average photos ever? And they've selected this as the winner...
Really?
Oh dear. What were the rest of the entries like?
I was going to enter this, but I just figured I wouldn't get anywhere and whoever won would have a portfolio of images such as this. But maybe theres better ones so I'll reserve judgement until I see them all.
But I always get the impression that curators in the public sector arts like underwhelming work to exhibit, so they can write more text with "it raises questions" etc , this kinda ties into the debate surrounding The Photographers Gallery and the lack of quality there.
Blimey you lot are a miserable bunch. It makes me embarrassed to be a photograper. What the hell's wrong with congratulating someone on their achievement?
