Two new Leica compacts

Leica has launched two new compact cameras - the Leica D-Lux 5 and the Leica V-Lux 2.

The Leica D-Lux 5 offers users full manual control plus a Leica DC Vario-Summicron 5.1 - 19.2mm f/2-3.3 ASPH zoom lens. It a has a 1/1.63-inch CCD sensor. Images can be viewed on a three-inch LCD monitor, with a resolution of 460,000 pixels. The camera also offers 720p HD video recording, saved in the AVCHD-Lite format. The D-Lux 5 will be available from October at £630.

A range of add-on accessories is also available for the D-Lux 5, including an EVF1 electronic viewfinder, which mounts onto the hotshoe and lets users to frame images directly through the lens. The Leica CF 22 flash unit adds extra flash and fill-in options. In addition, users can also buy a handgrip and a range of leather cases. The EVFI will retail at £270, the flash at £225 and the cases from £62.

Meanwhile, the Leica V-Lux 2 is aimed at travel and nature photographers, and features a Leica DC Vario-Elmarit 4.5-108mm f/2.8-5.2 ASPH lens. Capable of capturing both landscapes and macro photography, the lens shoots at focal lenths equivalent to 25-600mm in 35mm format, according to Leica. In addition the V-Lux 2 offers a 14.1 megapixel CMOS image sensor and high-speed burst shooting capability of up to 11fps at the full resolution or 60fps with a resolution of 2.8 megapixels.

The Leica V-Lux 2 also offers video capture in 1080i-AVCHD Full HD at the entire 24x zoom range and with an integrated stereo microphone. The camera features a three-inch display which can be rotated. The V-Lux 2 will also be available from October.

Is the shutter lag in these cameras...

any better than the lag in the equivalent Panasonic versions? Any advantages?
