Fujifilm plans second medium format film camera

Fujifilm has quietly unveiled plans to release a second medium format film camera following on the success of the GF670. The new camera - the GF670W - will sport a wide-angle lens

Author: Olivier Laurent

Two years ago, Fujifilm introduced the GF670 portable folding bellows film camera, jointly developed with Cosina. The camera's most unusual feature was its mechanism for switching between two different film formats - 6x7cm and 6x6cm. It was also fitted with a Fujinon EBC 80mm f/3.5 fixed focal length lens.

While the camera was first released in Japan, its instant success has forced Fujifilm to release it in the rest of the world - and now, it is planning to release a second version of the camera, this time with a 55mm lens.

The Fujifilm GF670W has been developed following "numerous requests for the production of a series of medium-format wide-angle cameras," says Fujifilm. The GF670W Professional has been designed for professional and high-end amateur landscape photographers, says the firm, and allows for the use of both 120 and 220 films.

It features a rangefinder, an aperture-priority AE mode, as well as manual exposure modes. Its 55mm lens is composed of 10 elements in eight groups, while its electronically controlled lens shutter has a speed of up to 1/500s.

The GF670W will be available in 2011. Pricing has yet to be determined.

I Respect Fuji

Perhaps hope-fully and need-fully this "2nd" will allow [ with thumb screws ] the inter-change of lenses as per the style of LINHOF Technicas.! I can just feel myself zipping around the city flashing this baby at every corner.

I certaily do not look forward to an individual camera for each lense, gasp...... ewww!

I feel inclined to add that we all truely need to support Fuji / Kodak because of their film, but also for purchasing this camera. Fuji, as a company is so advanced in the way they do corporate business. This is one of the very few companies that truely stands out as 'Planet Quality"!

I am also going back to film with a Zeiss Ikon, and Epson scanner. For some odd reality, the new makers of Rollei are so slow to respond to my letter as I certainly would like one of those. But, I hear they respond after 3-4 months.

I will also purchase that new 'X100' for my family in due course and as a gift for 'secret friends'... Hahaha!

All the Best!

will there be a 690...?

As a lover of longer/wider formats, I wonder if anyone cold tell me what Fuji's plans are regarding a 6x9 version of this new baby? I am currently looking to buy the older GW690III with a 65mm lens. If I new they were planning one with a wide-angle lens, I would wait until it came out and snap one up! However, shopping around for wide angle 6x9 cameras has made me realise that it seems like a dying format... which I struggle to understand. Its an incredible amount of data to record in a neg (I know there may be enlarger/printing issues) but surely scanning is a realistic option these days?
Any ideas anyone? Fuji - will you? (pretty please?)
