Magnum photographer Jonas Bendiksen is the latest speaker to join the programme for this year’s Vision photo festival in London
Author: Olivier Laurent
Jonas Bendiksen has signed up to this year’s Vision photo festival, where he’ll be speaking alongside Tom Hunter, George Georgiou and a host of further names and attractions at the BJP-run event, which takes place at the Business Design Centre in London on 19 November.
One of an acclaimed new generation of photographers to join Magnum Photos, Bendiksen is flying into London especially to talk at the event. Presenting work from the last decade, he’ll describe his journey from being a 19-year-old intern at the legendary photo agency to becoming a fulltime member a decade later, having brought out his first award-winning book, Satellites, photographed over the course of seven years in the fringe regions of the former Soviet republics. Published 15 years after the fall of the USSR, its haunting photographs and texts explore their peoples’ search for historical, religious and ideological identity – a timely look into the unfinished chapters of Soviet history. In 2005, with a grant from the Alicia Patterson Foundation, he started working on The Places We Live, a project on the growth of urban slums across the world, which combined still photography, projections and voice recordings to create three-dimensional installations. The resulting book was published in 2008.
He will be joined by Tom Hunter (featured in last month’s issue), who in many respects had a more remarkable journey, starting out photographing the community of travellers we lived among before finding success with one single iconic image, and eventually becoming the first living photographer to be given a show at the National Gallery.
George Georgiou will also present his images, an exclusive showing of his latest work, funded with a £5000 bursary having won the last ever Project Assistance Award run by BJP in partnership with Nikon UK. Additional guests include Stephen McClaren, photographer and co-author of Street Photography Now, Allen Murabayashi, founder and CEO of Photoshelter, who will explain how to make your website more visible, and the Archive of Modern Conflict, who will present Happy Tonite, featuring the best of Chinese contemporary photography. Further speakers include Format, who will present next year’s festival in Derby, and Trolley Books, who will show multimedia presentations of their latest projects. Further special guests include Self Publish Be Happy, who will showcase some of the best most recent artists’ books, and Beyond Words, the Edinburgh-based bookseller, who will be selling a wide range of new titles and running a programme of signings.
Vision 10 also presents the opportunity to try and handle many of the latest cameras and products first seen at Photokina, plus the chance to meet some of the UK’s leading fine art printers and photographic associations. You can also book one-to-one sessions with photography professionals such as Cheryl Newman, photographic director of Telegraph Magazine, Marian Paterson, photo director NME, or James Mullinger, photo editor of GQ magazine. Sessions are priced £25 each. Advance booking is essential.
“Vision delivers an entertaining, learning environment where creative professionals can get closer to the imaging world's leading innovators to share and discuss their ideas and network together,” says BJP editor Simon Bainbridge. “It’s a unique event where you can also meet the UK's leading educators, trendsetters and technology innovators.”
Vision 10 opens at the Business Design Centre in London at 10am on 19 November. Entry is £10 in advance, or £15 on the day.
