A member of Magnum Photos since 1998, Bruce Gilden is best known for his uncompromising, in-your-face approach to street photography, and in November, he brought that approach to Derby, UK, as part of a commission for the Format International Photography Festival 2011.
Gilden's commission, called Bruce Gilden: Head On, will be on show at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery. The photographer spent seven days in the streets of Derby, where he met former boxing champion Jake La Motta.
Gilden tells BJP's news and online editor Olivier Laurent about the encounter in this exclusive video, ahead of the release, on 04 March, of a 15-minute mini-documentary on the Magnum photographer's work in Derby.
The documentary will also be shown during the Format International Photography Festival, which will take place from 04 March to 03 April 2011. The festival will, through a programme of exhibitions, events, interactions and mass participation, examine the various strategies of Street Photography under the title Right Here Right Now: Exposures From the Public Realm.
