Since its launch in 2008, the Sony World Photography Awards 2011 have been divided into two contests - one for professional photographers and another for amateur shooters. The latter, called the Open contest, has now revealed its winners.
Divided in ten categories, the Sony Open Award winners are: Chan Kwok Hung (Hong Kong) in Action, Chumlong Nilkon (Thailand) in After Dark, Marek Troszczynski (Poland) in Architecture, Hubert Januar (Indonesia) in Arts & Culture, Edina Csoboth (Hungary) in Fashion, Andiyan Lutfi (Indonesia) in Nature & Wildlife, Wolfgang Weinhardt (Germany) in Panoramic, Raghuranjan Sarkar (India) in People, Carlos Henrique Reinesch (Brazil) in Smile and James Chong (Singapore) in Travel.
The winners, half of them coming from Asia, have been selected from among 51,000 submissions from 148 countries by a judging committee composed of British photography critic Francis Hodgson, who was joined by Andrew Saunders from Getty Images, Yann Salmon-Legagneur of Sony Europe and Paul Genge of Sony UK.
One overall winner will be announced at the Sony World Photography Awards gala ceremony on 27 April at the Odeon Leicester Square in London. The winner will receive a $5000 cash prize, as well as a Sony digital SLR camera.
