The Social goes Art

BJP and The Photographers' Gallery's social night is back at Barrio Central in London on Monday 28 March. This time we're looking at the art world, and we've invited David Campany and David Spero to help.

Last year, at the first Museum of Modern Art Photography Forum, Paul Graham gave a lecture entitled The Unreasonable Apple, in which he criticised the "sizeable part of the art world that simply does not get photography".

"They get artists who use photography to illustrate their ideas, installations, performances and concepts, who deploy the medium as one of a range of artistic strategies to complete their work," he continued.

"But photography for and of itself - photographs taken from the world as it is - are misunderstood as a collection of random observations and lucky moments, or muddled up with photojournalism, or tarred with a semi-derogatory 'documentary' tag."

On Monday 28 March, from 7pm, BJP and The Photographers' Gallery will consider this divide, with writer David Campany, photographer David Spero, and you. Is photography now being embraced by the art world and, if so, what's the effect? Should photography have its own history? What happens to work that doesn't fit in to the art or museum context? Doesn't photography has as many - or more - influences from outside the traditional arts system as within? Or is it about time photography was given its place in the nation's institutions?

Campany and Spero will talk for ten minutes each, then we'll hand over the discussion to our audience so we hope you can come along to Barrio Central on Poland Street, London, W1F 8PS and contribute. The Social runs every month on the last Monday of the month, but there's no meeting in in April as its a bank holiday.
