Organised by The Society of Editors, the Press Awards celebrates the best of British journalism, "recognising excellence in both individuals and teams in the media industry, across 25 different categories."
In the photographer of the year category, Matt Cardy of Getty Images came on top. "It is a real honour to win this prestigious award, given the incredibly tough competition in this category," says Cardy. "I am thrilled to have been part of the Getty Images news team and their support has made this winning work possible."
In a statement, Adrian Murrell, senior vice president of global editorial at Getty Images, says: "We are extremely proud that Matt has been recognised for his outstanding work. His portfolio is made up of the groundbreaking and compelling content Matt shot at Wootton Basset, the most powerful image taken from hundreds of similar repatriations; an image of David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Gordon Brown, which perfectly captured the uncertainty in British politics, as the three parties struggled to form a coalition after the election; and an image of National Trust's Stourhead, simply exquisite in its execution and featured in double page spreads in The Guardian and the Daily Mail.
