David Goldblatt received the award at the Sony World Photography Awards ceremony on 28 April. The Kraszna-Krausz Book Awards celebrate "excellence in photography and moving image publishing." They were founded in 1985 by Hungarian publisher and founder of Focal Press, Andor Kraszna-Krausz.
Goldblatt, alongside co-author Ivan Vladislavic, won the award for the book TJ: Johannesburg Photographs 1948-2010 / Double Negative: A Novel, bringing together Goldblatt's documentation of South African life for more than six decades. The two-volume book - one featuring Goldblatt's photographs, the other Vladislavic's novel responding to the pictures - describes "a difficult metropolis scarred by the history of apartheid, symbolic of contemporary South Africa."
The book was selected from a shortlist of three that also included The Thirty Two Inch Ruler / Map of Babylon, by John Gossage; and Camille Silvy: Photographer of Modern Life 1834 - 1910, by Mark Haworth-Booth.
The judges - Mary McCartney, David Campany and Yuka Yamaji - commented: "Goldblatt and Vladislaviċ's ambitious project explores the relationship between text and image. A highly effective pairing of fiction and photography, this innovative collaboration redefines the possibilities for writing on and about photography."

The Kraszna-Krausz Foundation has also presented a new award for Outstanding Contribution to Publishing, which went to German publisher Gerhard Steidl.
"Steidl began working as a designer and printer in 1967, when he was just 17 years old," says the foundation. "The first Steidl book was published in 1972, and in 1996 Steidl decided to follow his passion for photography and to start his own internationally oriented photo book program. Today, Steidl Publishers hold the world rights for the books of some of the most renowned photographers and artists across the globe including past Kraszna-Krausz Book Award winners Edward Burtynsky, Mitch Epstein, and Susan Meiselas."
