The prestigious World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass is a week-long event designed to help young and promising photographers "progress on the road toward professional maturity in terms of both theory and practice."

The Masterclass was created in 1994 and has been attended by photographers such as Jodi Bieber, Dominic Nahr, Matt Eich, Olivia Arthur, Munem Wasif and Cédric Gerbehaye among many others.

This year, the 12 selected photographers are Eunice Adorno (Mexico), Antonio Bolfo (USA), Kitra Cahana (Canada), Alinka Echeverria (Mexico/UK), Alessandro Imbriaco (Italy), Jakub Kaminski (Poland), Sebastian Liste Vicario (Spain), Leo Maguire (UK), Ivor Prickett (Ireland), Mohammed Salem (Palestinian Territories), Dimitri Stefanov (Bulgaria) and Anastasia Taylor-Lind (Sweden/UK).

They were selected by a panel of jurors that included Monica Allende of the Sunday Times Magazine, Aidan Sullivan of Getty Images, as well as photographers Lu Guang and David Alan Harvey, and deputy picture editor at The New York Times Meagham Looram.

The 12 photographers now have to complete a body of work around the theme "respect". The essays will be "discussed during sessions with the [six] masters and edited into a publication."

The Masterclass takes place from 28 October to 03 November in the Kunstenhuis in the Cultuurpark Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam.
