A rare 0-series Leica camera, first sold in 1923, has become the most expensive camera to be sold at an auction, reaching the unprecedented price of $1.9m

Author: Olivier Laurent

Six months after WestLicht Photographica set a new record for a Leica camera - the Leica MP2, built in 1958, which sold for €402,000 - the German institution has exceeded all expectations with the sale of an extremely rare Leica of the 0-series for €1.32m ($1.9m).

The camera had a starting price of €200,000, with an estimated value of at least €350,000 according to WestLicht. After a tough 20-minute auction, the camera was sold to an Asian bidder, becoming the "most expensive camera ever sold worldwide," claims WestLicht.

Held on 28 May, the auction featured 721 lots. A Leica MP2 was sold for €528,000, a Carl Zeiss Super-Q-Gigantar 0,33/40mm lens fetched €60,000 Euro. In total, 94% of the lots were sold, fetching €4.429m, making the auction "the most successful in the history of WestLicht".
