Following its first call for entries, Panos Pictures has now selected six photographers who will become part of the London-based independent agency.
Panos has taken on Guy Martin, the British photographer who was severely injured in the mortar attack that claimed the lives of Tim Hetherington and Chris Hondros in April. Martin is an alumni of the University or Wales, Newport, "where his first long-term project won the Observer Hodge Award."
Another addition to the agency is Chloe Dewe Mathews, a 28-year-old British photographer. In 2010, she hitchhiked from China back to Britain, which, Panos says, "became a recce for a lifetime's work ahead."
Irish photographer Ivor Prickett, who has, at times, seen his work sold by the agency, also joins Panos as a full member. Prickett won the Ian Parry Scholarship in 2007 and is now based in Lebanon. Since February 2011, he has been documenting the unfolding events in Egypt and Libya, among other countries. In May, he was selected to participate in this year's World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass.
Japanese photographer Shiho Fukada will be working for Panos from Beijing, says the agency. "She is working on a number of long-term projects in China and her native Japan." After receiving an Alicia Patterson Fellowship in 2010, she has been photographing the aftermath of Japan's recent earthquake.
Finally, Danish photographer Mads Nissen and Polish Kacper Kowalski have also joined Panos. Kowalski focuses on aerial photography "using the unusual perspective and control over the picture that being a pilot and photographer simultaneously gives him," says the agency.
Nissen, on the other hand, is working on a long-term project called "amazonas" which will be published in 2012. The photojournalist has received, over the past few years, numerous POYi awards, as well as a 2011 World Press Photo prize.
In a statement, Panos says it received more than 400 applications from 40 different countries. The additions comes as Panos is celebrating its 25th anniversary.
"Reaching the milestone of 25 years is proof that sticking to your principles and believing in what you do does pay off in the long run," says Adrian Evans, director of the agency. "Panos Pictures remains unique in occupying the space between the for-profit and the not-for-profit worlds while our enduring relationship with Panos London and the rest of the network continues to inform our philosophy and the stories we choose to explore."
He adds: "Looking forward, our goal is to be at the forefront of developments in the wider photo economy, making us market leaders in creative and inclusive approaches to visual communications. The selection of our six new photographers takes us closer to our goal. By engaging new young talent we gain from their fresh creative outlook while helping them develop their careers."
