Sony has unveiled its NEX-7 camera, a mirrorless model featuring a 24.3-megapixel sensor in a magnesium alloy body

Author: Olivier Laurent

Sony's NEX-7 camera uses an Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, which coupled with Sony's BIONZ image processing engine can offer a burst rate of 10fps at full resolution in speed priority mode.

The camera, which weighs only 291g (without a lens), has a sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 16,000, a shutter release lag of just 0.02 seconds - which Sony claims is the fastest of any interchangeable lens digital camera in the world - and a Quick AF with Object Tracking technology.

The NEX-7 has a magnesium-alloy body, with two new control wheels on the top of the camera. Similarly to the A77, the NEX-7 uses a XGA OLED Tru-Finder with approximately 100% frame coverage. It also has a 7.5cm Xtra Fine LCD screen, that can be angled up to 90° or 45° down, according to Sony.

The camera can also shoot AVCHD Full HD movies with high-quality stereo sound at frame rates of 50p or 25p.

For more advanced users, the NEX-7 now has an Auto-lock Accessory Shoe, which can support a series of A-Mount accessories such as flashes and LCD monitors.

The NEX-7 will retail, from November, at £1000 body only or £1100 with an exclusive black version of the kit 18-55mm lens.

Excellent

Nothing balmy. Just brilliant.

Viewfinder, handling ??

Stats look brilliant but I wonder will it work in terms of usability. Dismayed to see what looks like a pop up flash rather than a viewfinder on top. The day a credible manufacturer comes up with something like this coupled with a decent optical viewfinder I think they'll crack open a huge market..

errm, noise anyone?

Like the idea but 24.3 MP in an APS sized sensor? That's gotta be super noisy surely .......

viewfinder

frank, if you read closer, the NEX-7 do have a built in viewfinder, only it is OLED not optical

Optical VF

You have your choice in camera design of an optical viewfinder and anSLR mirror box, or a mirrorless system with no optical viewfinder but an electronic one. These options are mutually exclusive due to the laws of physics.

Very Pricey

While DSLR’s are consistently priced it seems the prices of mirrorless digital cameras like this just keep going up and up. The Fuji X100: appealing camera, but way over priced. And this is over a grand! Even with the eventual price drop it will still be shockingly expensive. When I saw the camera I was interested, but not anymore.

shutter

why does it have a shutter?

Brilliant, Absolutely Brilliant

Finally, everything one would want in what could arguably be the successor to the Leica M: interchangeable lenses, viewfinder in the camera, light, compact, sharp design. If there are no problems with the sensor, the 24mp sensor will blow everyone out of the water. The ideal camera. Definitely buying it.
