With a 10.1 effective megapixel, 1/1.7 inch sensor and Expeed C2 image processing, the Coolpix P7100 is the successor to Nikon's P7000.

The manufacturer claims that the new camera offers improved image quality, reduced time lag, faster autofocus speeds and quicker start up times. It also features a tilting 7.5cm LCD monitor.

Nikon is pitching the camera as a D-SLR companion, and has included RAW file format and full manual controls. The P7100 also includes a 7.1x zoom Nikkor lens, which includes two ED glass elements that Nikon claims will reduce chromatic aberration and fringing at longer focal lengths.

The camera records HD moving footage too, with optical zoom and autofocus, at a rate of 24fps.

Nikon launched several other new compacts on 24 August, including two 'superzooms', the Coolpix S6200 10x zoom and the Coolpix S8200 14x zoom.
