A retrospective of British fashion photographer Corinne Day's work went on show at Gimpel Fils in London yesterday, coinciding with the launch of London Fashion Week. The Face will be exhibited until 01 October.
Day, a model-turned-photographer, learned how to use a camera from her lifetime partner Mark Szaszy. She championed a natural style of fashion photography, refusing to re-touch images and becoming identified with a 'heroin chic' style that mirrored early 1990s grunge. She helped launch Kate Moss' modelling career with a cover shoot for The Face magazine in July 1990; the two The two became friends and even shared a flat for three years. Day died in August 2010.
"Day is renowned for her original and unique fashion and documentary photography," says Bonhams, which is including one of Day's iconic images of Moss in its Photographs Sale on 17 November 2011. Heaven is Real was shot for the February 1991 issue of The Face, and the vintage print has a pre-sale estimate of £1000-£1500.
