Greenpeace's iPad application

Greenpeace has unveiled an iPad app, which showcases four decades of photography "from the environmental frontline."

Author: Olivier Laurent

The Greenpeace Images HD application has been released to coincide with the organisation's 40th anniversary and features 30 images retracing its history of environmental activism. It features "iconic imagery ranging from the first Greenpeace voyage to stop nuclear weapons testing in 1971, right through to activists taking action to prevent environmental crimes today."

The app, which was launched at the Visa Pour l'Image photojournalism festival in Perpignan, will be constantly updated with new images from next month. "The idea of the app, when it's not in this special edition, is to keep people up-to-date with what we're doing through our pictures," John Novis, head of photography at Greenpeace International, tells BJP.

"The iPad is the fastest selling consumer item on the market at the moment," Novis adds. "It's incredible. With this app, we're targeting a lot of industry people, of course, but also the larger public that is interested in photography - the unknown crowd of photo enthusiasts. The same happens with our Facebook page where we have a large number of people who follow us because of our photography. A medium like the iPad is perfect for photography - a strong picture can tell a great story."

The free application can be downloaded from iTunes.
