Canon is developing a new-concept EOS-series digital SLR camera that will sport a 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor and record 4K video at a frame rate of 24p

Author: Olivier Laurent

The announcement coincides with the introduction of Canon's new Cinema EOS system, which is composed of a new interchangeable lens camcorder and seven new Cinema EF lenses.

The new concept camera, which remains unnamed at the moment but is believed to include Canon's new Cinema denomination, will be equipped with a 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor and will record movies at a resolution of 4K.

While Canon is quick to point out that the product name, specifications and scheduled launch date have yet to be decided, it confirmed that the 4K resolution won't be achieved across the sensor's full-frame, but, instead, cropped to an APS-H equivalent.

PR ploy

This is clearly Canon's latest PR attempt to keep photographers with ageing EOS 1 DS Mk IIIs on board. Sell them something which doesn't yet exist.
I suspect the successor for the 1 DS has run into serious development or production problems or been outstriped by the latest offerings from Nikon and Sony. Why else would they have taken over FOUR YEARS to replace their flag shop model ? Despite the hype, the 1 DX was clearly meant to be a successor for their top end sports camera. Since the DX has received less than glowing tributes from studio photographers the Canon PR team is now touting the prospect of great things in the pipeline - even though no launch date hs been set. If Nikon or Sony bring out a new high res camera soon, Canon are in serious trouble. Only the floods in Thailand affecting Nikon production may save them. And has anyone yet seen those new grey Canon sports lenses which were promised over ONE YEAR AGO ? Apart from a few review copies, no retail outlet has them.

4K footage with JPEG2000 or H.264?

I'm wondering what standard will be chosen for 4K video encoding. Some independent research shows JPEG2000 is superior to H.264 at such high resolutions. However, will "simple superiority" be enough to fight the all-popular H.264?

What are they trying ?

Do they (canon & others) want photographers to be a Cinematographers ?

PR ploy or keeping up to date?

With a huge surge of cross breeding in cameras and the role in which some photographers see themselves having, its a great reassurance that through investing into a High quality studio camera, you also have the capability to take up cinematic roles should you so desire. I wouldn't assume that canon are influencing anyone to become cinematographers, this is entirely down to the user, but it seems logical to buy into a system that offers this choice seeing as where the market is going.
