Panasonic plans on releasing, in time for Christmas, what it claims to be the world's smallest 3D photo and video camera

The Lumix DMC-3D1 features two 25mm lens units with 4x optical zoom capabilities, which allows the camera to produce 3D images and movies, as well as record one scene at two different focal lengths.

The two lenses can also be used to simultaneously record both still and movies images, says Panasonic. "This innovative new feature pushes the boundaries of photography - allowing users more photographic control," claims Panasonic. "Perfect for shooting football games, weddings, children's parties and festivals for example - users can capture their loved one specifically whilst still capturing the entire scene and with creative editing an impression of a two camera shoot can also be made."

Both lenses are comprised of 11 elements in 10 groups, including five aspherical lenses. They also feature a newly-redesigned Optical Image Stabilizer to suppress handshake.

The 3D1 sports a 12-megapixel High Sensitivity MOS sensor, but can only shoot 3D images at a resolution of eight megapixels. The camera also uses a multi-process Noise Reduction feature, which applies optimum noise reduction according to the brightness of each part of the picture. "Both high frequency noise that occurs in darker areas and low frequency noise in lighter parts are suppressed in real time," says Panasonic. "As a result, images recorded in low lighting situations are now dramatically clear even at high ISO settings."

The Panasonic DMC-3D1 will be available in time for Christmas, claims Panasonic, and will retail at £450.
