The 2012 awards are set to be the most comprehensive yet, say the organisers after they've introduced four new categories and contests, alongside L'Iris d'Or.
This year, the panel of jurors, which is chaired by writer and curator Susan Bright, will also be awarding a prize in the newly-introduced Moving Image category.
The competition, which is now in its sixth year, will see one professional photographer receive L'Iris d'Or award, which comes with a $25,000 cash prize. The winner of the Open competition, which is dedicated to amateur photographers, will receive $5000.
Last year, the top prize went to Argentinian photographer Alejandro Chaskielberg, who had spent two years capturing rare photographs of Parana River Delta islanders.
Deadline for entries is 04 January 2012. For more information, visit www.worldphoto.org/competitions.
Nice award, but in reality it’s kinda cheap when other thoughts surface.
Perhaps Sony should step up to the Planets requirements and pay out more cash. And then double that again for the individuals and communities who provided their images to the success of the photographer. The images noted, need more than being catalogued in a book of Corp Tax Deductions.
Perhaps that London gallery owner could send some cash back to where it’s needed most. Maybe the Queen would send him a letter of thanks to make it more worthwhile. He should write and ask. Correspondence from a Queens’s secretary is enlightening, having had such in the past myself.
It is too bad a person has to enter to win. There are people that really suffer to record the Human Condition. They do not know about these awards. Sony, go find them!
