Canon has confirmed that its flagship EOS-1D X digital SLR will only be released in late April, following development delays

Author: Olivier Laurent

Originally, Canon's new flagship 1D camera was to be released in early March, but following unidentified development delays, the firm expects to release the EOS-1D X at the end of April.

Dubbed the "filmmaker's DSLR", the EOS 1D-X can record Full HD (1920x1080p) movies from the full-frame sensor with a full range of manual settings to control exposure, focus and frame rate (1920 x 1080: 30 (29.97), 25, 24 (23.976) frames per second, 1280 x 720: 60 (59.94), 50 fps, 640 x 480: 30 (29.97), 25 fps), while sound levels can also be displayed and adjusted on the LCD screen, "ensuring complete control over every aspect of a shoot," says Canon.

The camera's sensor is a newly-deeloped full-frame 18.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, with a sensitibility range of ISO100 to ISO51,200 - which is expandable up to ISO204,800. The dual processors offer a 2-stop improvement in noise performance, "making it easier to capture low noise images, even in extreme low-light conditions."

The EOS-1D X also has a new 61-point wide-area autofocus system, with 41 cross-type points, including five dual cross-type points. The camera features a new RGB metering system linked to the autofocus system and powered by its own DIGIC 4 processor, allowing the camera to detect faces and colours to ensure correct exposure levels and improved AF tracking, according to Canon.

Both DIGIC 5+ processors allow for the camera to shoot up to 14fps (in JPEG only).

Once available, the camera is expected to retail at £5300.

Loss of market share!

Canon marketing annouced the EOS-1D X too early - probably as a spoiler to the anticipated Nikon launch of the D4. Even with the original availability date Canon's market share was vulnerable to the D4. This is bound to cause a ripple in the "pre-order" market. The 1D X had better be as good as the hype when it does arrive.

Why twice the price

I was under the impression that my 5D mark 2 was a film makers camera ? This new X is twice the price and apart from 60 fps which is also available on 7d whats the difference?

Trop Share!!

These things are all now much too expensive as this greedy industry doubles and trebles lens prices (new 24-70mm f2.8L Canon e.g.) and scrambles over itself to create ever more rungs on an upgrade ladder that should not exist at all anyway.

As they all record HD video at the same resolution, that video quality should be identical, whether you buy a 550D or a 5D MkII, A Nikon D4 or a Nikon D5000.

But they all arrange it such that the quality is NOT the same, even with prime lenses using the APS-C sensors.

In the same way Canon crippled 5D MkII image quality to ensure they sold the 1Ds MkIII, and now , probably they have delayed this one in order to rewrite the firmware such that it competes with the Nikon models, rather than have you wait for ages as they did with the firmware updates to "give" you improved video possibilities on the 5D MkII.

I think their recovery post holocaust is amazing, but still we are being rooked three ways from whichways, whereas computers have plummeted in cost.

This 18MP fullframe Canon costs what the 1Ds MkII did in 2004. It should be the same price as a 5D MkII and the 5D MkII should have equal image quality and shutter lag (it is half the speed in use compared to a 1Ds Mk1,MkII, or a D200 and D7000 Nikon.: Reaction time somehow doubles the price miraculously as does waterproofing. It should be illegal for any portable electrical device NOT to be waterproof and dustproof. Yes, there ought to be a law and a 5 year warranty as standard-like a lot of cars have now. And prices around the globe should all be the same.

Agree about the pricing

So agree about international pricing, Australians and EU people get screwed royally by Canon, even though US money is worthless. Why don't we all just print more money!
