In association with Proud Camden, British Journal of Photography presents an exclusive interview with post-punk star Adam Ant and a gallery of images from the forthcoming exhibition Dandy in the Underworld: A Photographic Retrospective.

This special issue, available exclusively through the British Journal of Photography for iPad, includes an exclusive interview video in which Adam Ant discusses his relationship with photographers, including David Bailey and Lord Snowdon, and showcases the sketchbooks used to plan his costumes and music videos.

In the interview, Ant talks of working with photographer and director Anton Corbjin, recounting how they would walk around Soho and the red light district. At one time, the musician showed the photographer an image of an old French magazine depicting a young girl lying down and looking up to a poster of Jean-Paul Belmondo on the ceiling. "That became the cover," says Ant. "He really got it."

The musician also recounts meeting Brian Duffy, via his son, Chris Duffy, a bass player in Ant's first band Bazooka Joe. "We'd all go to his dad's place but he was quite a scary man, he'd tell you off," says Ant. "But Chris learned a lot from his father."

More recently, Ant has been shot by photographers such as Nadav Kander and Lord Snowdon. Kander, says the musician, "did quite a lot of retouching and photoshopping" and carefully lit the shots, using blues and greens. "I was told to just be flamboyant, and the session was pretty fast, but there's a lot of work in these shoots."

The full 20-minute video interview comes with a selection of iconic images from the forthcoming exhibition at Proud Camden. It is available now for £1.99, or free with a BJP app subscription.

Dandy in the Underworld: A Photographic Retrospective will be on show at Proud Camden from the 07 March to the 29 April. On the 06 March Adam Ant will be opening the exhibition with a concert in aid of Debra, a charity which raises funds for children affected by Epidermolysis Bullosa.
