Nikon has announced the development of a new 800mm super-telephoto, fixed focal length lens, designed for Nikon's FX-format cameras

Author: Olivier Laurent

The new 800mm AF-S lens offers a large aperture of f/5.6, and sports a Vibration Reduction system to make it "fully compatible with the autofocus system of all Nikon FX-format cameras", says Nikon.

"The new lens has been developed to further strengthen the Nikkor line-up of super-telephoto lenses. It will boast the longest focal length of any Nikkor autofocus lens, and has been designed with field sports, news and wildlife photographers in mind," adds the firm.

The lens is said to be dust and water resistant, and will be presented, for the first time, at Photokina in September.

Availability and pricing have yet to be determined.

!0 years of Life?

Are Nikon going to make it so it lasts a lifetime or use leadfree solder so it loses track aftrer 10 years as all their new lenses are now doing?

If Lead-free what is the planet going to do with tens of millions of pieces of expensive equipment that should be OK but are not any more and cannot be rewired and repaired. ? This may only last for one Olympics, like the D4 or D800 you stick it on.

After that its a bit big for a paperweight.

Oh dear Peter

Your diligence in knocking everything Nikon does is getting quite boring...

Oh and by the way, the 10 has nothing whatsoever to do with expected lifetime. Posted no less than 5 years ago.

A bit late

Pity it's not available now. Then you wouldn't have to worry about taking "Pro" camera equipment to the Olympics. You could just shoot from outside!
