Professional photographers have until 17 January 2013 to enter the 56th annual photojournalism competition. However, participants must register for a username and password by 11 January at 23h59 Central European Time.

World Press Photo is also accepting entries for its third annual multimedia contest, which carries a 10 January 2013 deadline.

Judging will take place from 02 to 14 February 2013 in Amsterdam, with the winners announced on 15 February. The prize-winning images will be presented in an exhibition from April 2013 before travelling to more than 45 countries.

The overal winner will receive a €10,000 cash prize as well as a Canon professional digital SLR and lens kit.
