MAY ISSUE – 2018

Issue #7871 explores the theme ‘Breaking Point: Searching for Change’.

We collaborate with Europe’s biggest photofestival for our latest issue, exploring the theme of ‘Breaking Point: Searching for Change’.

Artistic director Krzysztof Candrowicz explains the thinking behind Hamburg Triennial of Photography’s call to action, which examines the subject of sustainability through contemporary documentary and conceptual photography.

Gabor Arion Kudasz’ Human series riffs on the humble brick as one of the literal and metaphorical building blocks of civilisation.

Salvatore Vitale examines Switzerland’s obsession with security, and how that shapes not just the physical environment, but also its mentality.

Sarker Protick focuses on the people who depend of the Padma River in Bangladesh, its ever-changing course a metaphor for cycle and transience as much as it warns about rising water levels.

Claudius Schulze and Maciej Markowicz, the two artists behind 2 Boats, tell us about creating their floating studios, and how they took to Europe’s canals and rivers to spread spread awareness of the festival and the questions it raises.

Plus we bring you the best from the festival’s open call, showing around Hamburg’s independent galleries. In all, 320 artists across 80 venues address the theme, in what has become one of the Europe’s major photofestivals, reasserting Hamburg as one of the great photography capitals.

And we reveal the winner’s of our International Photography Award. Danish trio Sara Brincher Galbiati, Peter Helles Eriksen and Tobias Selnaes Markussen will show The Merge, their future-sceptical project examining the impact of artificial intelligence, at TJ Boulting this summer.
