Shortlist for Deutsche Borse
Luc Delahaye, Stephen Shore, JH Engstrom and Jorg Sasse will be battling it out at The Photographers' Gallery this summer for the inaugural £30,000 Deutsche Borse Photography Prize 2005.
The four photographers have been shortlisted for the prize, which this year replaces the long-running Citigroup Prize. Unlike the Citigroup Prize, the Deutsche Borse was open to any photographer who had exhibited or published 'significant' work in Europe.
Despite this, the British photography scene provided the basis for two of the nominations, with Delahaye nominated for the exhibition Luc Delahaye - Photographs, held at the National Museum of Photography, Film and Television (05 February - 03 May), and Shore for the Thames & Hudson publication Uncommon Places: The Complete Works (a reprint and extension of his 1982 work Uncommon Places).
Engstrom, meanwhile, was nominated for the publication Trying to Dance (published by Journal), in which he mixed colour photography with graphic, distressed black-and-white prints. Sasse's digitally reconfigured 'found' photography was nominated after his exhibition at Galerie Wilma Tolksdorf in Frankfurt (03 September - 03 November).
The shortlisted photographers were selected by a pan-European jury, from recommendations made by a much larger, international Academy. Paul Wombell, director of The Photographers' Gallery, chaired the jury, and jury members included Kate Bush of Phaidon Press, Rosa Olivares, director of EXIT Magazine in Madrid, and Christoph Ruys, director of the Antwerp PhotoMuseum.
Wombell said: 'The jury's selection this year represents a broad range of approaches in contemporary photographic practice. Each photographer has contributed to photography in a unique way, ranging from those photographers who have achieved an international reputation to those who have achieved success in their own field, but are ready to emerge into the international arena. For the first time this exhibition will place them within a context of excellence, regardless of their status.'
Work from all four shortlisted photographers will go on show at The Photographers' Gallery from 08 April - 05 June, with the winner announced at an award ceremony on 11 May. The three runners-up will each be awarded £3000 in prize money.
