Leica S2: Up to 200 units available next month

Leica expects to have between 100 and 200 units of its Leica S2 medium format camera available when it launches next month, BJP can confirm

Speaking to BJP today during an exclusive preview of the Leica S2, Stephan Schulz confirmed that the £16,000 camera would be launched in December as communicated last month. The S2 was first expected to be released in the summer, before being pushed back to October and then December.

Leica blamed higher-than-expected advance orders for the delay.

However, Schulz now assures Leica customers the camera will be released on time and that up to 200 units will be available in the first month of commercialisation. 'We think we will have between 100 to 200 units at launch,' he tells BJP.

BJP was able to preview the camera this morning. Adam Woolfitt, our medium format camera reviewer, explains that he was impressed by the results. 'The sharpness of the images is impressive,' he says. Watch BJP's preview video here.

A two-part interview with Schulz and David Bell, Leica UK managing director, can also be found here.

A full review of the Leica S2 will be published in print and online on 25 November.

BJP has also learnt that initial orders for the Leica X1 camera have been unprecendented, forcing Leica to triple its projections for the compact camera.
