From the experts: how to get your project off the ground

Our two day April workshop explores successful methods of funding and marketing photographic projects, where participants will learn about the creation and dissemination of photographic projects, looking at crowd funding and pre-selling, digital strategies, commercial collaborations, and multimedia. Speakers include: Olivia Arthur (Magnum photographer), Sabine Unamun (Arts Council England), Simon Bainbridge (editorial director, British Journal of Photography), Marc Prüst (photography consultant, curator, and teacher) and Monica Allende (independent photo editor and cultural producer). Photographers looking to finance ambitious projects and get them seen might be intimidated by the task ahead of them. Competition is fierce, traditional avenues of funding work are narrowing and ensuring your work resonates with an audience can be a tough task. Led by leading Magnum photographers and industry professionals, the programme presents incredible training opportunities for early & mid-career photographers. Each workshop is a two-day photographic masterclass that focuses on demystifying the business of the industry, establishing a professional network of industry contacts, understanding the requirements of the market and identifying entry realistic routes into employment. The first day focuses on lectures from key speakers on specific areas of the photographic industry, giving behind the scenes tips and practical advice explaining how to work and succeed in their area of expertise. A second day of portfolio reviews lead by industry specialists will provide photographers with an honest, constructive and critique of existing work. Taro Karibe: “Any desire can be satisfied in Tokyo”

“I gave Taro the prize because he was honest,” says the Magnum photographer Jacob Aue Sobol of the Japanese photographer Taro Karibe. “Working as a salary man, but longing so much to explore the core of his existence. Karibe came top in a Tokyo workshop with Sobol, run by the Magnum Photos agency for his image exploration of Tokyo, both a “utopia, where any desire can be satisfied, and a dystopia, filled with something threatening.” Karibe says. “Instead of focusing on the great photograph and looking for tricks to improve, he started a search within himself – using the camera as a tool to express his own inner life,” Sobol says. “He started taking pictures to ask questions instead of trying to give answers.
