The classic British butterfly house acts as the backdrop to Alexander Mourant’s Aurelian, an evocative study of the passing of time and the slippery nature of memory. “These hot, artificial environments are used through the work to probe the nature of experience, such as an assembly point, or an artist’s studio, as an envisioned idea where time is not absolute but continuously contained and all-encompassing,” says the 23-year-old, who recently graduated from Falmouth University.

Thomas Duffield’s Whole House is Shaking

“I try to use photography to investigate the aspects of my family life that have been deliberately set aside,” says Thomas Duffield. His final-year project, The whole house is shaking, pays tribute to an idyllic childhood on a small farm on the outskirts of Leeds, while simultaneously confronting a darker enclave of family history. Composed from small details of everyday life and portraits of his mother, sister and grandfather, the project also dwells on his father’s clandestine heroin addiction, hidden from the children while they were growing up.

BJP’s Breakthrough Awards 2016 are open for entries

The second edition of British Journal of Photography’s Breakthrough Awards are now open for entries, offering students and recent graduates an opportunity to showcase their work and gain international exposure. There are two award categories, one for Undergraduate students and another for recent graduates and current MA students. Both categories offer a Series Award and Single Image Award. Four winners will be selected to have their work exhibited in east London as part of the Free Range graduate shows, and published in BJP’s revered monthly magazine and across our online social channels, reaching over a million creatives worldwide. The winning images will also be showcased globally on WeTransfer, the leading file transfer site with over 70 million visitors a month. Runners up in each category will be featured on the BJP website and receive free WeTransfer+ accounts. Photographs can be captured in any format – film or digital – and in any style or genre. Students and graduates of non-photographic courses may apply. BJP Breakthrough – judges announced

We are pleased to introduce our judges for the inaugural BJP Breakthrough Awards, our prestigious photography award singularly capable of connecting the next generation of photographers with the established photography industry. The judges have been handpicked by the British Journal of Photography for their photographic expertise, industry influence and special interest in emerging talent. Joining the panel from the British Journal of Photography is Editorial Director Simon Bainbridge who has guided the magazine for the last 11 years, and our Online Editor Tom Seymour, formerly the film editor of i-D magazine, and a feature writer for The Guardian and Independent. BJP Projects Editor Gemma Padley, who writes on photography for The Telegraph and Photomonitor and will also be joining us. Also judging the entries are esteemed photographers Laura Pannack whose prizes and nominations include the World Press Photo, The Sony World Photography Awards, The Magenta Foundation and Lucies IPA, and Lewis Chaplin, co-founder of publishing house Fourteen Nineteen and creative studio Loose Joints.
