Unfathomable: Geert Goiris’ futuristic objects in abandoned landscapes

Given how meticulously he frames these minimal vistas, his approach is surprisingly impulsive. “I rarely set out with a fixed plan; it’s more like drifting, exploring and then finding things that I think will fit into an expanding series or collection,” he says.

An element of chance, too, is something he enjoys incorporating into the work, often responding to locals he meets on the spur of the moment. “I like to talk to local people and explain what I’m doing, and then they point me in directions, which is something I really love,” he explains.

When he finally discovers that perfect spot, his photographic process is equally casual. “It’s almost like an automatism. When I see something that I think would make a great image, the process is very fast – the framing, the positioning of the camera. By the time I have my backpack off and have installed my camera on the tripod, I already know where I’m going to stand and I make the photograph.” THREE SUNS
