The award, titled A New East Photo Prize, is curated by Calvert 22 Foundation and The Calvert Journal, and will recognise “practitioners offering representations of the social, cultural and physical landscape of ‘the New East'”.
“Although hugely diverse, the countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union are often represented in an outdated manner which negates the rich culture and variety of creative output from these nations. The Prize seeks to broaden perceptions of the New East through the medium of photography,” Calvary 22 said in a statement.
The prize will give photographers from Eastern Europe, The Balkans, Russia and Central Asia the opportunity to get their your work in front of photographers Donald Weber and Alexander Gronsky, curators Kate Bush and Marina Paulenka (head of photography at The Media Space and founder and director of Organ Vida international photography festival Croatia respectively), and picture editor Roger Tooth (head of photography at The Guardian and The Observer).
The Prize is free to enter, and invites professional and non-professional photographers to submit a finalised project made within the last two years. The winner will be announced in December, and will have the opportunity to make a photobook, and will also take part in a two-month group exhibition of shortlisted work at the Calvert 22 Foundation’s space in London.
The winning artist will be profiled in The Calvert Foundation’s online magazine, The Calvert Journal, and will have their work featured by New East Photo Prize partners the Guardian and Bird in Flight magazine.
The prize also includes a Special Award, dedicated to unfinished documentary photography projects. The winner will receive a £1000 grant towards finishing their project from Bird in Flight magazine.
Founded in 2009 by Russian-born, London-based economist and collector Nonna Materkova, the foundation launched its journal in 2013 with Ekow Eshun as its editor-in-chief. Eshun, former director of the Institute of Contemporary Arts, is now creative director of the organisation.
