Portrait of Britain
Portrait of Britain is a groundbreaking nationwide photography exhibition which celebrates the diversity of the British population through contemporary photographic portraiture.
Each year BJP selects 100 photographs to be shown on JCDecaux’s digital network of screens. Displayed across the UK for the month of September, the exhibition is seen by millions of people.
Portrait of Humanity
Portrait of Humanity is a new global initiative by 1854 Media, publisher of British Journal of Photography, in partnership with Magnum Photos.
We are inviting photographers of any level, to show us the world through their eyes, to capture the many faces of humanity, and to document the universal expressions of life; laughter, courage, moments of reflection, journeys to work, first hellos, last goodbyes, and everything in between. What’s normal to you might be extraordinary to someone else.
200 shortlisted will be published in the Portrait of Humanity book, and 50 winning images will be exhibited at various locations across the world. Second and third place winners will each receive $2,500, and one first place winner will receive $5,000 to create a project exploring their interpretation of humanity.

BJP’s International Photography Award is a leading showcase of the best contemporary photographic talent. Photographers around the world are invited to submit their work to a panel of elite industry experts, with one winner selected each year to receive a solo exhibition at TJ Boulting, an innovative gallery in the heart of London, plus a £5000 production grant from the UK’s leading pro-lab, Metro Imaging. The winning photographer also has their work published by the BJP.
The Breakthrough Awardsare BJP’s annual showcase of the best student and graduate photographers from around the world. Each year an expert judging panel, handpicked from the photography, art and publishing industries, selects four outstanding photographers to have their work presented in a group exhibition in east London, be published on BJP’s print and digital platforms, and receive expert advice on launching a successful career in photography.
There are two entry categories, one for undergraduate students and the other for postgraduate students and recent graduates. A Series Award and Single Image Award winner will be selected in each. Students and graduates of non-photographic courses are also welcome to enter.
